I’m Karl Joachim Brende, an economic historian and currently Visiting Research Fellow at BI Norwegian Business School. I completed my Master’s degree in Economic History at the University of Oslo under the supervision of Professor Einar Lie.

My research investigates the history of credit and finance in Scandinavia, with a focus on the evolution of early financial instruments such as bills of exchange, mortgages, and interpersonal loans. I employ quantitative and interdisciplinary methods, including social network analysis and new digital tools—to understand how these instruments shaped past economic and social life.
